Incredible Finish: Blind Wrestler Racks Up Honors
What a weekend it was for Baldwin Wallace Wrestler Jesse Gunter, who represented the school at last weekend’s NCAA Division III National Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Gunter finished the national tournament with a 5-1 record and claimed third place in the country. “Yes, I got third which is a good accomplishment but my goal is still to win that national title,” Gunter said.
What makes the third place finish so incredible is the fact that Jesse is legally blind, meaning while everyone else competing has 20/20 vision, Jesse sees very little. “I can see 10 percent of what’s in front of me, so no peripheral vision,” said Gunter. Jesse was born legally blind, the nerves are disconnected to his brain, but that didn’t stop him from wrestling, a sport he took up in the 7th grade.
