Mike Schultz: Designs “Golden” Prosthetics
“Monster” Mike Schultz is creating opportunities to stand on the top of the podium. This comes with determination, hard work and designing his own prosthetic. A prosthetic that has gotten the attention of other athletes who demand he best.
His wife Sarah has this to say about the design process:
“We first joked in the hospital, just after his amputation, that Mike would build his own prosthetic leg. Four months after his amputation we learned that the current prosthetics on the market would not hold up to the motor sports Mike enjoyed, so he started designing the Moto Knee. He was a professional athlete, he understood suspension, he was always inventing and now he was an amputee. Mike was the perfect combination to build a leg that allowed him return to the sports he loved.
Through our journey we have meet other active amputees that benefit from the Moto Knee & Versa Foot and that lead to us starting our company BioDapt. It’s so rewarding to watch other amputees benefit from our products Mike made, but also they have encouraged him to grow as an adaptive athlete. He never snowboarded before his amputation, but need to learn to develop his products. He is now a gold medalist in Paralympic Snowboard Cross LL-1 and total of 15 athletes from the USA and worldwide are using BioDapt prosthetics during the games. Advancements in recreational prosthetics is needed, and this has been our goal, so adaptive athletes can compete at the highest level.
Mike and I have been racing together for 20 years and watching him win a Paralympic gold medal is defiantly the highlight of our career. I am so proud of all his hard work, determination and never give up attitude!”
