History Made: Oksana Masters wins Silver in Nordic Skiing
Winning Bronze in rowing during the 2012 London Paralympics was not enough for Oksana Master. She made the move to winter sport and took up Nordic ski racing. Yesterday she made history and became the first athlete in 20 years to medal in Nordic skiing for the the United States.
Master finished with a time of 39:16.0 right behind the leader Lyudmyla Pavlenko from Ukraine with a time of 38:54.3.
“It’s pretty amazing I am in disbelief. I have been rowing for 10 years and only skiing for less than a year,” noted Masters. “I really have to thank my training from rowing because it prepared me well for skiing; I am so happy right now.” Masters told the USOC.
The last American to medal in Nordic skiing was Michelle Drolet at the Lillehammer 1994 Paralympic Winter Games. On a side note Drolet’s guide Jon Kreamelmeyer was recently inducted into the Paralympic Hall of Fame.
