Prime Time Tonight: Amy Purdy Hits the Hollywood Stage
Amy Purdy is used to hitting the stage with the world watching.
After her bronze medal finish in snowboard-cross in Sochi on Friday she flew back to Los Angeles to prepare for her performance on a Hollywood stage for the premiere of Season 18 of Dancing with the Stars that airs 8 PM tonight on ABC. Purdy tweeted on Saturday, “Let me tell ya, The best way to fight jetlag is to dance for 3 hours the second you get off the plane! Woooh! That was fun.” Amy is a double amputee and the first individual with a disability on the cast. She’s paired with the 5-time champion, Derek Hough. Derek actually flew out to Sochi to practice their first cha-cha performance due to limited time.
Amy has been practicing day and night while in Sochi – all day on the snow, all night on the dance floor. You can watch some of their rehearsal here. Amy discusses her chemistry with her partner and how her rehearsals have gone thus far in this interview.
USA Today reports, she isn’t able to point her toes but will wear high heels and has special legs for dancing. She almost panicked as she had to use a Sochi prosthetic shop to adjust her legs from discomfort in her calf muscles.
The next big question, will she try to draw attention to her prosthetic legs? Purdy told USA Today in an extensive interview, “I know there will be a lot of focus on my legs. But my hope is that people see me as a dancer like anyone else. My hope is that it’s not all about my legs.”
And don’t think she’s all business. as she shared with People Magazine her dancing selfie.
